  1. Catholic High School’s (CHS) 2018 Direct School Admission – Secondary (DSA-Sec) is now open for application. The last day for application is 4.00pm, 6 July 2018 (Friday).
  2. We have broadened our DSA-Sec categories in 2018, and CHS will now offer 12 different categories of DSA-Sec across our Dual Track of O-level Programme (OP) and Integrated Programme (IP).
  3. We welcome Primary 6 gentlemen who demonstrate diverse academic and non-academic achievements and talents to apply for a place in CHS. Successful applicants who join CHS will be given opportunities to develop themselves in their DSA area.
  4. You should refer to the following Sections ‘A’ to ‘H’ for instructions on applying for our DSA-Sec.

(Section A) General Information from MOE about DSA-Sec

Parents and students are encouraged to choose schools wisely based on the student’s aptitudes and strengths, bearing in mind the schools’ academic and non-academic requirements, and the programmes available to develop the area of talent.


(Section B) CHS’ 12 Categories of DSA-Sec and How DSA Students Are Developed

  1. CHS offers 12 categories of DSA-Sec, as shown in Table (1)
  2. All applicants can apply up to four (4) CHS DSA-Sec categories (in any combination).
    • E.g. DSA-Sec (OP-Sports) + DSA-sec (IP-Sports)
    • E.g. DSA-Sec (OP-Sports) + DSA-Sec (IP – Humanities) + DSA-Sec (IP – Performing Arts)
    • E.g. DSA-Sec (IP- Bilingualism) + DSA-Sec (OP – Performing Arts) + DSA-Sec (IP – Leadership)

  • For enrolling talented OP track students for Performing Arts CCAs: Chinese Drama, Chinese Orchestra, Choir, English Drama, Modern Dance, Symphony Band.
  • Successful DSA Performing Arts applicants must join the CCA that they audition for DSA.
4 DSA-Sec (OP – Sports)

  • For enrolling talented OP track students for Sports CCAs: Basketball, Floorball, Softball, Table Tennis, Track and Field, Volleyball and Wushu.
  • Successful DSA Sports applicants must join the CCA that they audition for DSA.
5 DSA-Sec (IP – Leadership)

  • For enrolling talented IP track students who demonstrate aptitude and passion for leading changes and in service of others.
  • Successful DSA Leadership applicants can choose their CCA upon joining CHS.
6 DSA-Sec (IP- Music Elective Programme)

  • For enrolling talented IP track students who demonstrate aptitude and passion for music, and are planning to join the MEP.
  • MEP students can choose their CCA, although we encourage them to choose a performing arts CCA such as symphony band to leverage their present talent.
  • Outstanding CHS Level 1 MEP student enrolled in 2019 may be awarded CHS’ Joseph Wallace Family Music Scholarship.
7 DSA-Sec (IP – Performing Arts)

  • For enrolling talented IP track students for Performing Arts CCAs: Chinese Drama, Chinese Orchestra, Choir, English Drama, Modern Dance, Symphony Band.
  • Successful DSA Performing Arts applicants must join the CCA that they audition for DSA.
8 DSA-Sec (IP – Sports)

  • For enrolling talented IP track students for Sports CCAs: Basketball, Floorball, Softball, Table Tennis, Track and Field, Volleyball and Wushu.
  • Successful DSA Sports applicants must join the CCA that they audition for DSA.
9 DSA-Sec (IP- Bilingualism)

  • For enrolling talented IP track students who demonstrate aptitude and passion for both Chinese and English languages.
  • Successful DSA Bilingualism applicants can choose their CCA upon joining CHS.
10 DSA-Sec (IP – Humanities)

  • For enrolling talented IP track students who demonstrate aptitude and passion for the Humanities, Social and Environmental Sciences (e.g. current affairs, politics, international relations and sustainable development).
  • Successful DSA Humanities applicants can choose their CCA upon joining CHS.
11 DSA-Sec (IP- Mathematics)

  • For enrolling talented IP track students who demonstrate aptitude and passion for mathematics.
  • Successful DSA Mathematics applicants can choose their CCA upon joining CHS.
12 DSA-Sec (IP – Science)

  • For enrolling talented IP track students who demonstrate aptitude and passion for science.
  • Successful DSA Science applicants can choose their CCA upon joining CHS.

How Are DSA Students Developed (via Subject-based TDPs / MOE Special Programmes)?

DSA and other high-performing students in talent areas are developed via:

  • Unique specialised programmes and workshop conducted by university and industry experts/trainers
  • Seminars and lecture conducted with university and industry experts
  • Internal and external competitions such as Olympiads
  • Class allocation by talent areas where relevant
  • Research projects and mentorship with professors and staff from Institutes of High Learning
  • Workshops, camps, seminars and research programmes with MOE, e.g. Gifted Education
  • Overseas immersion trips (sometimes with conference, camp or school immersion)
  • Job shadowing or work attachment, e.g. with research institute
  • … and more.

  1. First, read through the next section (D) on “Criteria for CHS DSA-Sec” before applying.
  2. Before applying online:
    • Applicants not studying in MOE mainstream schools and/or not taking the PSLE in 2018 must obtain a registration number (RGxxxxxxx) from MOE Customer Service Centre (CSC) (starting 7 May 2018).
    • All International Students must take part in MOE’s Admissions Exercise for International Students (AEIS) before they are considered for DSA-Sec allocation. International Students who do not meet MOE’s AEIS requirement will not be considered for DSA-Sec allocation. Click here for MOE’s AEIS website.
  3. Next, click here to complete our online DSA application form, which allows you to apply up to 4 categories of our DSA-Sec.
    • Use a computer desktop/laptop internet browser to fill in the form. Avoid using mobile phone or tablet to complete the form.
    • Please follow the instructions carefully. An incomplete application form will NOT be considered.
    • Use only ONE online form to apply for the different DSA-Sec categories.
    • We do not accept hard copies of submission.
    • You should print a copy of the acknowledgement as proof of your submission.
    • There is no need to submit hard copy of documents (e.g. certificates) to CHS at this point during the submission of the online application form. We will inform shortlisted applicants about when and how to submit requisite documents.
    • Applicants must have a clear passport-sized digital photo of themselves to complete this form. The photo must be in JPG/JPEG format and no larger than 400 kb in size.
    • All applicants will receive an email upon submission of the online form: this email contains a link that allows applicants to edit their submitted form, if necessary, before 4.00 p.m, 6 July 2018 (Friday).
    • Since 2017, applicants for CHS DSA no longer need to register or take the GAT and Academic Selection Tests. However, applicants will still be required to attend interviews and auditions/ sports trial as per talent area.
  4. Importantly, after submission of your online application form, please immediately check your email (the one registered for notification in your application form) for notification about your submission.
    • Always check your email account’s SPAM or JUNK box, in case our email is accidentally diverted there.
  5. All applicants applying through MEP, Performing Arts and/ or Sports must be aware of the Tentative Schedule for MEP Tests and CCA Trials / Auditions “ as listed under Section F, as he will be expected to complete any required test/ trial/ audition by at least our 2nd DSA Trial/ Audition Schedule.
  6. We will look through all DSA applications’ online forms and shortlist applicants based on their submission, e.g. what they write for their Personal Statement (for DSA IP applicants), their portfolio and experiences (e.g. SYF participation and achievements), their P5 and P6 results, and other areas.
  7. Shortlisted DSA-Sec IP applicants (for interviews and/or trials/auditions) will be notified via email and phone.
    • Shortlisted DSA-Sec IP applicants applying through MEP, Performing Arts and/ or Sports must attend MEP tests, performing arts auditions and/ or sports trials listed under Section F.
    • Only shortlisted applicants will be scheduled for trials and/or auditions, and they will be informed about the trials and/or auditions by either 4.00pm, Wednesday, 20 June 2018 or 4.00pm, Wednesday, 11 July 2018 (depending on their date of submission of DSA applications).
    • See Section “F – Tentative Schedule for MEP Tests/ Performing Arts Auditions/ Sports Trials.
    • Interviews for all shortlisted DSA-Sec IP applicants will tentatively take place from 23 July to 10 August 2018 (tentative dates). Shortlisted applicants will be notified by 20 July about their interview dates.
  8. Shortlisted DSA-Sec OP applicants (for interviews and Performing Arts Auditions and/ or Sports Trials) will be notified via email and phone.
    • Shortlisted DSA-Sec OP applicants applying through MEP, Performing Arts and/ or Sports must attend MEP tests, performing arts auditions and/ or sports trials listed under Section F.
    • Only shortlisted applicants will be scheduled for trials and/or auditions, and they will be informed about the trials and/or auditions by either 4.00pm, Wednesday, 20 June 2018 or 4.00pm, Wednesday, 11 July 2018 (depending on their date of submission of DSA applications).
    • See Section “F – Tentative Schedule for MEP Tests and CCA Trials / Auditions” for details. Only shortlisted applicants will be scheduled for trials and/or auditions.
    • Interviews and trials/auditions for shortlisted DSA-Sec OP applicants will take place from 22 June to 10 August 2018 (depending on DSA category). 
    • Please see Section F for details.
  9. Only applicants who have successfully cleared our interview round and any relevant audition/ test/ trial will be considered for an offer of DSA places.
  10. Notification of outcomes for all applicants (successful or unsuccessful) will be sent via email by 31 August 2018.  Our school’s decision is final.

(Section D) Criteria and Requirements

General Criteria and Requirements for Applicants

  1. All SC/ SPR applicants should be born between 2 Jan 2002 & 1 Jan 2007.
  2. All International Student applicants should be born between 2 Jan 2004 & 1 Jan 2007.
  3. Underage applications not allowed.
  4. As Catholic High School is a Special Assistance Plan (SAP) school:
    • All IP students must offer Higher Chinese Language (HCL) in Years 1 and 2;
    • All O-level Programme students must offer at least Chinese Language (CL);
    • CHS does not offer other Mother Tongue Languages such as Malay or Tamil; and
    • Students exempted from offering CL/HCL for PSLE in primary school cannot apply to SAP schools, including CHS.
  5. DSA-Sec applicants, shortlisted or not, will be expected to submit through the online application form:
    • Personal Statement on passion for the talent area(s) of their choice; and
    • relevant listing of their portfolio, i.e. list of their certifications, achievements, experiences, appointments etc. Applicant need not submit evidence (e.g. photocopies of certificates) until they are shortlisted and called up for an interview.
  6. Shortlisted DSA-Sec (IP) applicants will be required to:
    • Attend an interview with CHS.
    • Complete relevant assessment(s)/ sports trial/ performing arts audition/ MEP audition and test. Applicants for DSA-Sec (IP-Leadership) will be required to attend the Leadership Situational Assessment.   7. Shortlisted DSA-Sec (OP) applicants will be required to:
    • Attend relevant assessment(s)/ sports trial/ performing arts audition/ MEP audition and test, including interviews; applicant for DSA-Sec (OP-Leadership) will be required to attend the Leadership Situational Assessment.     • Attained at least a Grade 6 practical certificate (merit) in one of the Western / Chinese music instruments from Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) or the equivalent standard from other examination boards including the NAFA-CCOM for Chinese music;
    • Attained at least a Grade 5 theory in ABRSM or equivalent examination board
  4. Excel in CHS DSA’s music written test and audition
3 DSA-Sec (OP – Performing Arts)

  1. Applicants should possess passion and aptitude for any of the following Performing Arts: Chinese Drama, Chinese Orchestra, Choir, English Drama, Modern Dance, Symphony Band
  2. Achieved consistent and very good results for P5 Mid-Year and End-of-Year Examinations and P6 Mid-Year Examination or equivalent

  1. Applicants should possess passion and aptitude for any of the following Sports: Basketball, Floorball, Softball, Table Tennis, Track and Field, Volleyball and Wushu

  3. Possess excellent writing and language abilities
  4. Possess a strong interest, an inquiring mind and drive to excel and develop bicultural perspectives, attitudes, knowledge and skills for service to others
  5. Applicants who have achieved consistent and excellent results in CL, HCL and English will be given priority
  6. Applicants who have won awards in CL and EL related competitions will be given priority
10 DSA-Sec (IP – Humanities)

  1. Applicants should demonstrate aptitude and passion for the Humanities (e.g. History, Geography, Literature), Social and Environmental Sciences (e.g. current affairs, politics, international relations and sustainable development)
  2. Achieved consistent and excellent results for P5 Mid-Year and End-of-Year Examinations and P6 Mid-Year Examination or equivalent
  3. Possess excellent writing and language abilities
  4. Achieved academic results, portfolio or other indicators that demonstrate aptitude and passion for the Humanities, Social and Environmental Sciences
  5. Applicant should demonstrate strong abilities in independent research, primary data collection and oral presentation
11 DSA-Sec (IP – Mathematics)

  1. Applicant should demonstrate strong interest, an inquiring mind and drive to excel in mathematics study, research and application
  2. Achieved consistent and excellent results for P5 Mid-Year and End-of-Year Examinations and P6 Mid-Year Examination or equivalent
  3. Achieved academic results, portfolio or other indicators that demonstrate aptitude and passion for mathematics
12 DSA-Sec (IP – Science)

  1. Applicant should demonstrate strong interest, an inquiring mind and drive to excel in science, technology and its applications.
  2. Achieved consistent and excellent results for P5 Mid-Year and End-of-Year Examinations and P6 Mid-Year Examination or equivalent.
  3. Achieved academic results, portfolio or other indicators that demonstrate aptitude and passion for science

 Note for Applicants Not Studying in MOE Schools

Applicants in non-mainstream schools (e.g. SPED Schools, overseas or international schools, or international students) and those who are currently not studying in MOE schools and/or not taking the PSLE in 2018 (e.g. Returning Singaporeans/PR, those on Leave of Absence), are required to obtain a DSA Registration Number from MOE Customer Service Centre (CSC), starting from 7 May to 6 July 2018.

International students must also register for MOE’s upcoming Admissions Exercise for International Students (AEIS), apart from applying through this form. We will require proof of AEIS registration before we proceed with the processing of your DSA application. (Section E) Important Information about DSA-Sec

  1. Catholic High School reserves the right to:
    1. Withhold information about the number of DSA places that are available and have been / will be offered; and
    2. Withhold the reasons for non-selection of applicants and the results of the DSA-Sec selection trials and interview.
  2. Students should consider carefully before opting for DSA. Students can only amend or withdraw their submitted school preferences before the end of Exercise School Preference (ESP) stage. Any amendment or withdrawal from the exercise will not be allowed by MOE after the ESP stage.
  3. Our school’s offer for admission under the DSA-Sec Exercise is conditional upon students’ commitment to participate in the particular activities/CCA required of him by the school for the duration of his studies in CHS (and Eunoia Junior College, for IP students). For example, a student who joins CHS through DSA-Sec (IP-Performing Arts), based on his talent for playing Erhu with the CHS Chinese Orchestra CCA, will not be allowed to change his CCA and instrument specialisation without explicit written approval from the school.
  4. As per MOE requirement, students admitted to our school through DSA-Sec Exercise will not be allowed to participate in the annual Secondary One Posting Exercise as places have already been reserved for them in CHS. Students admitted to CHS through DSA-Sec Exercise will not be allowed to transfer to another school after the release of the PSLE results.
  5. Students who have opted for our school under DSA-Sec Exercise must achieve Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) results (T-score) that would enable them to be eligible for admission to the Express course option.
  6. Successful DSA students admitted to CHS are expected by MOE to honour the commitment to CHS (and Eunoia Junior College, for IP students) for the duration of the programme admitted to, i.e. 4 years with CHS for DSA OP, and 6 years with CHS and EJC for DSA IP.

(Section F) Tentative Schedule for MEP Tests and CCA Trials / Auditions

  • NOTE: the following tables are actual DSA trials and auditions. The general CCA Try-out and experience at our 26 May Open House are not DSA trials and auditions.
  • The following information about trials and additions is provided for applicants to be cognizant of when they are likely to attend MEP tests, Performing Arts auditions and/or sports trials.
    1. CHS reserves the right to adjust the schedule when necessary to meet exigencies of needs.
    2. Students who cannot make it for the 1st set of MEP tests, Performing Arts auditions and/or sports trials schedule (e.g. family is overseas) will be offered dates under the 2nd set of scheduled dates.
