Our STEM Curriculum
Catholic High School recognises that our gentlemen have strong aptitude and passion for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
- The CHS Science curriculum -offered in tandem with our Mathematics curriculum- believes in equipping our students to view the world through the perspective of science, nurturing them to have a passion for discovery and innovation in life and guiding them to use their scientific knowledge to lead others for the betterment of our society.
- We aim to nurture Inquirers, Investigators and Innovators. At the heart of our interdisciplinary Science, Technology and Engineering Programme (iSTEP) curriculum are these 4 ‘E’s: enhance, excite, engage and empower.
- Our programmes enhance the learning of STEM by adopting an exploratory approach that excites and stimulates our students’ intellectual curiosity, and empowers them to find their own passion area in STEM.
- A vast range of learning opportunities are available to IP and OP students, be it our Space and Flight Science Programme, CΩERGY science talent development programme, Japan Overseas Immersion and Cultural Programme and more, as shown by the diagram below:
INTERDISCIPLINARY SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING PROGRAMME (iSTEP)
ENHANCE, EXCITE, ENGAGE, EMPOWER
The CHS interdisciplinary Science, Technology and Engineering Programme (iSTEP) aims to produce students who are inquirers, investigators and innovators who will make meaningful contributions to the society.
- In the 21st century, students must not only have knowledge and skills but the right attitudes and values as well. Making sound and ethical decisions will allow them to make a positive impact and benefit the people around them.
- The 4 ‘E’s of the programme are Enhance, Excite, Engage and Empower.
- The programme inspires to enhance the learning of science through an enriched curriculum and excite the students about the forces of science, technology and engineering around them. We hope that the interdisciplinary nature of our curriculum will eventually enhance the learning of our students, both in and out of class.
- Students will no longer see science as learning and memorising facts but rather see science as a way of thinking and something more relevant to what is happening around them. Science is exploratory and must stimulates their curiosity and motivates them to find out more. Once such curiosity is evident, students will be excited to find out more.
- We believe excitement is a first step to engaged learning. By engaging in authentic real-world scientific and technological problems, students may then recognize that science and engineering can contribute to meeting many of the major challenges that confront society today and future problems of tomorrow.
- It is through the interdisciplinary nature of our approach that students see the meaningful connections among science, technology and engineering in a rapidly changing world. Numerous platforms and opportunities then empower our students to use their talents and skills to benefit the community and beyond.
Apart from the traditionally strong and rigorous academic teaching and learning in class, CHS Science Department aims to deepen and enhance students’ experiences in science learning through activities and programmes tiered for all levels of students (see diagram below).
