2017 Direct School Admission – Secondary (DSA-Sec) Exercise

  • All DSA-IP applicants (shortlisted for interviews) were informed about attending interviews, via emails and/or phone calls, by last week.
  • All DSA-IP applicants who were not shortlisted (for interviews) would also have received an email from us by last week.
  • Shortlisted DSA-IP applicants who completed the interview round(s) will be informed of their application outcome by 31 Aug 2017.

  1. Catholic High School’s (CHS) 2017 Direct School Admission – Secondary (DSA-Sec) is now open for application. The last day for application is 4.00pm, 7 July 2017 (Friday).
  2. We have broadened our DSA-Sec categories in 2017, and CHS will now offer 9 different categories of DSA-Sec across our Dual Track of O-level Programme (OP) and Integrated Programme (IP). In addition, with effect from 2017, applicants for CHS DSA no longer need to register or take the GAT and Academic Selection Tests.
  3. We welcome Primary 6 gentlemen who demonstrate diverse academic and non-academic achievements and talents to apply for a place in CHS.
  4. Prospective students and parents can attend our Open House on 27 May 2017 to learn more about our school and the DSA-Sec.

(Section B) Overview of CHS’ 9 Categories of DSA-Sec

  • CHS offers 9 categories of DSA-Sec, as shown in Table (1)
  • All applicants can apply up to four (4) CHS DSA-Sec categories (in any combination).
    • E.g. DSA-Sec (OP-Sports) + DSA-sec (IP-Sports)
    • E.g. DSA-Sec (OP-Sports) + DSA-Sec (IP – Humanities) + DSA-Sec (IP – Performing Arts)
    • E.g. DSA-Sec (IP- Bilingualism) + DSA-Sec (IP – Performing Arts) + DSA-Sec (IP – Leadership)

Students can apply to MEP when they have been posted to CHS via Sec 1 registration after PSLE. However, DSA via MEP is only available to students who want to join the IP.

(Section C) Steps for Applying to CHS DSA-Sec

  1. First, read through the next section (D) on “Criteria for CHS DSA-Secbefore applying.
  2. Next, click here to complete our online DSA application form, which allows you to apply up to 4 categories of our DSA-Sec.
    • Please follow the instructions carefully. An incomplete application form will NOT be considered.
    • Use only ONE online form to apply for the different DSA-Sec categories.
    • We do not accept hard copies of submission.
    • You should print a copy of the acknowledgement as proof of your submission.
    • There is no need to submit hard copy of documents (e.g. certificates) to CHS at this point during the submission of the online application form. We will inform shortlisted applicants about when and how to submit requisite documents.
    • Applicants must have a clear passport-sized digital photo of themselves to complete this form. The photo must be in JPG/JPEG format and no larger than 400 kb in size.
    • All applicants will receive an email upon submission of the online form: this email contains a link that allows applicants to edit their submitted form, if necessary, before 4.00 p.m, 7 July 2017.
    • With effect from 2017, applicants for CHS DSA no longer need to register or take the GAT and Academic Selection Tests (as was required in the past by CHS). However, applicants will still be required to attend interviews and assessments / sports trial as per talent area.
  3. Importantly, after submission of your online application form, please immediately check your email (the one registered for notification in your application form) for notification about your submission.
    • Always check your email account’s SPAM or JUNK box, in case our email is accidentally diverted there.
  4. All applicants applying through MEP, Sports and/or CCAs must be aware of the Tentative Schedule for MEP Tests and CCA Trials / Auditions” as listed under Section F, as he will be expected to complete any required audition/sports trial by at least our 2nd DSA Trial/ Audition Schedule.
  5. We will look through all DSA applications’ online forms and shortlist applicants based on their submission, e.g. what they write for their Personal Statement (for DSA IP applicants), their portfolio and experiences (e.g. SYF participation and achievements), their P5 and P6 results, and other areas.
    1. Shortlisted DSA-Sec IP applicants (for interviews and/or trials/auditions) will be notified via email and phone.
      1. Shortlisted DSA-Sec IP applicants applying through MEP, sports and/or CCAs must attend tests, sports trials and/or auditions listed under Section F. Only shortlisted applicants will be scheduled for trials and/or auditions.
      2. Only shortlisted applicants for sports/performing arts/MEP trial/audition will be informed by either 4.00pm, Wednesday, 21 June 2017 or 4.00pm, Wednesday, 12 July 2017 (depending on their date of submission of DSA applications).
      3. See Section “F – Tentative Schedule for MEP Tests and CCA Trials / Auditions” for details.
      4. Interviews for all shortlisted DSA-Sec IP applicants will take place from 18 July to 11 August 2017 (tentative dates). Shortlisted applicants will be notified by 17 July 2017  21 July about their interview dates.
    2. Shortlisted DSA-Sec OP applicants (for interviews and sports trials) will be notified via email and phone.
      1. Only shortlisted applicants for sports trial will be informed by either 4.00pm, Wednesday, 21 June 2017 or 4.00pm, Wednesday, 12 July 2017 (depending on their date of submission of DSA applications). See Section “F – Tentative Schedule for MEP Tests and CCA Trials / Auditions” for details. Only shortlisted applicants will be scheduled for trials and/or auditions.
      2. Interviews and trials / auditions for shortlisted DSA-Sec OP applicants will take place from 23 June to 15 July 2017.

  6. Only applicants who have successfully cleared our interview round and audition/sports trial will be considered for offer of DSA places.
  7. Notification of outcomes for all applicants (successful or unsuccessful) will be sent via email by 31 August 2017.  Our school’s decision is final.

(Section D) Criteria and Requirements

General Criteria and Requirements for Applicants

  1. All SC/ SPR applicants should be born between 2 Jan 2001 & 1 Jan 2006.
  2. All International Student applicants should be born between 2 Jan 2003 & 1 Jan 2006.
  3. As Catholic High School is a Special Assistance Plan (SAP) school:
    • All IP students must offer Higher Chinese Language (HCL) in Years 1 and 2;
    • All O-level Programme students must offer at least Chinese Language (CL);
    • CHS does not offer other Mother Tongue Languages such as Malay or Tamil; and
    • Students exempted from offering CL/HCL for PSLE in primary school cannot apply to SAP schools, including CHS.
  4. DSA-Sec IP applicants, shortlisted or not, will be expected to submit through the online application form:
    • A Personal Statement on passion for the talent area(s) of their choice; and
    • A relevant listing of their portfolio, i.e. list of their certifications, achievements, experiences, appointments etc. Applicant need not submit evidences (e.g. photocopies of certificates) until they are shortlisted and called up for interview.
  5. Shortlisted DSA-Sec (IP) applicants will be required to:
    1. Attend an interview with CHS;
    2. Complete relevant assessment(s) / sports trial. These assessments do not require applicants to prepare ahead, so applicants should not enquire with the school on the nature and format of the assessments nor specially prepare for them prior to taking them.
    3. Submit portfolio for applied talent area(s) to CHS, only when requested by CHS; and
    4. Submit a letter of recommendation and character reference, only when required by CHS
  6. Shortlisted DSA-Sec (OP – Sports) applicants will be required to:
    1. Attend sports trial and an interview; and
    2. Submit portfolio for applied talent area(s) and/or submit a letter of recommendation and character reference, only when required by CHS

  1. Applicants should demonstrate aptitude and passion for both Chinese and English languages
  2. Achieved consistent and excellent results for P5 Mid-Year and End-of-Year Examinations and P6 Mid-Year Examination or equivalent
  3. Possess excellent writing and language abilities
  4. Achieved academic results, portfolio (e.g. competitions, projects and exposure to bilingual and bicultural programmes) or other indicators that demonstrate aptitude and passion in both languages
  5. Possess a strong interest, an inquiring mind and drive to excel and develop bicultural perspectives, attitudes, knowledge and skills for service to others
4 DSA-Sec (IP – Humanities)
  1. Applicants should demonstrate aptitude and passion for the Humanities, Social and Environmental Sciences (e.g. current affairs, politics, international relations and sustainable development)
  2. Achieved consistent and excellent results for P5 Mid-Year and End-of-Year Examinations and P6 Mid-Year Examination or equivalent
  3. Possess excellent writing and language abilities
  4. Achieved academic results, portfolio or other indicators that demonstrate aptitude and passion for the Humanities, Social and Environmental Sciences
  5. Applicant should demonstrate strong abilities in independent research, primary data collection and oral presentation
5 DSA-Sec (IP – Leadership)
  1. Applicant should demonstrate exceptional character, aptitude for leadership, ability for critical thinking and good communication skill
  2. Achieved consistent and excellent results for P5 Mid-Year and End-of-Year Examinations and P6 Mid-Year Examination or equivalent
  3. Possess portfolio, leadership experience and appointment (e.g. CCA appointment, Prefectorial appointment), or other indicators that demonstrate aptitude and passion for leading changes in service of others
6 DSA-Sec (IP – Mathematics)
  1. Applicant should demonstrate strong interest, an inquiring mind and drive to excel in mathematics study, research and application
  2. Achieved consistent and excellent results for P5 Mid-Year and End-of-Year Examinations and P6 Mid-Year Examination or equivalent
  3. Achieved academic results, portfolio or other indicators that demonstrate aptitude and passion for mathematics
7 DSA-Sec (IP – Music Elective Programme)
  1. Applicant should demonstrate strong interest, an inquiring mind and drive to excel in music study, composing and/or practical
  2. Achieved consistent and excellent results for P5 Mid-Year and End-of-Year Examinations and P6 Mid-Year Examination or equivalent
  3. Achieved outstanding performance in music and meet the following criteria:
    1. Attained at least a Grade 6 practical certificate (merit) in one of the Western / Chinese music instruments from Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) or the equivalent standard from other examination boards including the NAFA-CCOM for Chinese music;
    2. Attained at least a Grade 5 theory in ABRSM or equivalent examination board
8 DSA-Sec (IP – Performing Arts)
  1. Applicants should possess passion and aptitude for any of the following Performing Arts: Chinese Drama, Chinese Orchestra, Choir, English Drama, Modern Dance, Symphony Band
  2. Achieved consistent and excellent results for P5 Mid-Year and End-of-Year Examinations and P6 Mid-Year Examination or equivalent
  3. Possess portfolio or other indicators that demonstrate outstanding achievements, passion and aptitude for the Performing Arts, e.g. top placings or represented school at Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts Presentation
9 DSA-Sec (IP – Science)
  1. Applicant should demonstrate strong interest, an inquiring mind and drive to excel in science study, research and application
  2. Achieved consistent and excellent results for P5 Mid-Year and End-of-Year Examinations and P6 Mid-Year Examination or equivalent
  3. Achieved academic results, portfolio or other indicators that demonstrate aptitude and passion for science

 Note for Applicants Not Studying in MOE Schools

Applicants in non-mainstream schools, Returning Singaporeans (SC/SPR) and foreign students, who are currently not studying in MOE schools, are required to obtain a registration number from MOE Customer Service Centre (CSC), starting from 8 May to 7 July 2017.


(Section E) Important Information about DSA-Sec

  1. Catholic High School reserves the right to:
    1. Withhold information about the number of DSA places that are available and have been / will be offered; and
    2. Withhold the reasons for non-selection of applicants and the results of the DSA-Sec selection trials and interview.
  2. Students should consider carefully before opting for DSA. Students can only amend or withdraw their submitted school preferences before the end of Exercise School Preference (ESP) stage. Any amendment or withdrawal from the exercise will not be allowed by MOE after the ESP stage.
  3. Our school’s offer for admission under the DSA-Sec Exercise is conditional upon students’ commitment to participate in the particular activities/CCA required of him by the school for the duration of his studies in CHS (and Eunoia Junior College, for IP students). For example, a student who joins CHS through DSA-Sec (IP-Performing Arts), based on his talent for playing Erhu with the CHS Chinese Orchestra CCA, will not be allowed to change his CCA and instrument specialisation without explicit written approval from the school.
  4. As per MOE requirement, students admitted to our school through DSA-Sec Exercise will not be allowed to participate in the annual Secondary One Posting Exercise as places have already been reserved for them in CHS. Students admitted to CHS through DSA-Sec Exercise will not be allowed to transfer to another school after the release of the PSLE results.
  5. Students who have opted for our school under DSA-Sec Exercise must achieve Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) results (T-score) that would enable them to be eligible for admission to the Express course option.
  6. Successful DSA students admitted to CHS are expected by MOE to honour the commitment to CHS (and Eunoia Junior College, for IP students) for the duration of the programme admitted to, i.e. 4 years with CHS for DSA OP, and 6 years with CHS and EJC for DSA IP.

(Section F) Tentative Schedule for MEP Tests and CCA Trials / Auditions

  • The following information about trials and additions is provided for applicants to be cognizant of when they are likely to have to attend MEP tests, sports trials and CCA auditions.
    1. CHS reserves the right to adjust the schedule when necessary to meet exigencies of needs.
    2. Students who cannot make it for the 1st MEP Tests and/or CCA trial/audition schedule (e.g. overseas) will be offered dates under the 2nd
